*1 How to Register

To register, you will need to fill in the application form at the counter.
Once you have completed your registration, you will be able to enter the library without going through the procedures every time.
* Registration can only be done during 9:00-17:00 on weekdays.
Necessary documents may differ according to your enrollment status, so please check the information below.
Also, only original documents are acceptable. Copies and scanned images cannot be accepted.

[Faculty Staffs]
  • Please bring your faculty staff ID.
  • If you are a fixed-term teaching staff, you will need to bring a document indicating your period of employment. (E.g. Notice of Employment)
  • If you are a part-time lecturer of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences/College of Arts and Sciences, no documents are required.
[Former Faculty Staffs (Full-time)]
  • Please bring your Certificate of Employment and identification (e.g. driving license, insurance card etc.)
  • *Former fixed-term full time teaching staffs cannot make a registration. (E.g. former project professors, former visiting professors etc.)
[Alumni and Program Completed Students]
  • Please bring your identification (e.g. driving license, insurance card etc.) and any one out of the following:
    Certificate of Graduation, Degree Certificate, University of Tokyo Alumni Card, Certificate of Program Completion, or Certificate of Satisfaction of Credit Requirements Program Withdrawal.
[Members of the "Komaba Tomo-no Kai"]
  • Please bring your member’s card of the "Komaba Tomo-no Kai" and identification (e.g. driving license, insurance card etc.).
  • For information about becoming a member of the "Komaba Tomo-no Kai", please contact the "Komaba Tomo-no Kai" (Japanese Only).

*2 How to make an Application on the Day of use

Please bring your “Card for Entrance” listed above and come to the counter.
You will be asked to fill in the Entrance Application Form.
No contacts are necessary before hand. Also, registration cannot be made.

*3 How to make a Pre-application

[Undergraduate Student of Other Universities]
  • A letter of introduction from your university library is required.
  • Please make an application at your university first.
  • When you come to the University of Tokyo library, please bring the letter of introduction and your student ID. (The letter of introduction will be collected when you arrive at the library.)
[Other than listed above]
  • Please make a pre-application at the Komaba Library User Service Section.
  • Please make an application by writing the necessary contents on e-mail two days before the day you plan to use the library (excluding week-ends and national holidays), or if by return postcard, about a week before.
  • We will contact you about whether you can/cannot use the library.
  • * When you make an application, please make sure that the material you would like to borrow is in the Komaba Library, by searching on University of Tokyo OPAC.
  • The materials stored in the Komaba Library are only those which have the [location] starting from "Komaba.Lib.".
  • Materials with the location starting with "CAS." are not stored in the Komaba Library.

1. To enter the library

For basic information on how to enter the library, please see this table.

Q1-1.What do I do when I forgot to bring the card used to enter the library?
  • A1-1. If you are a student of the Komaba campus, please bring your certificate of enrollment.
  • The certificate of enrollment can be issued from the automatic issuing machine located in the first floor of the Administration Building.
  • If you are not a student of the Komaba campus, or when the Administration Building is closed, please contact the counter or the User Service Section.
  • If your registration information is confirmed, you will be able to enter the library.
  • * Even if you are able to enter the library without your card, you will not be able to borrow any materials.

Q1-2. How can I take a tour of the library?
  • A1-2. If it is 9:00-17:00 on a weekday, you will be able to take a 30-minute library tour.
  • Please bring your identification (e.g. driving license or insurance card) and come to the library counter.
  • You will only be able to take a tour of the facilities, and you will not be able to read the materials.
  • * Eating, drinking, smoking and filming/taking photos are prohibited. Also, please do not talk in a loud voice.

  • If you would like to take a tour of other facilities in the Komaba campus, a separate application needs to be made to the Public Relations Office of the College of Arts and Sciences.

2. Borrowing Materials

For information on loan period, number of books that can be borrowed, and about whether you are able to borrow materials or not, please see this table.

Q2-1. What are the materials that can be borrowed?
Q2-2. What do I do to borrow materials from the library?
  • A2-2. Please bring your usage ID and the material that you would like to borrow, to the counter.
  • If your usage ID is an IC type card, you can also use the self-checkout machines.

  • If you are from another university/research institution, you will not be able to borrow materials by directly visiting the library.
  • Please contact us through the library of the institution that you belong to.

Q2-3. How can I extend the loan period?
  • A2-3. Please make an extension through MyOPAC, or by bringing the material directly to the counter.
  • An extension can be made if it is within the loan period.
  • The maximum number of times of loan period extension of the materials held by the Komaba Library is once for the members of the "Komaba Tomo-no Kai", and twice for other people.
  • (The number of extension that can be made is different for some methods of loaning such as "Research Loan" and "Special Loan".
  • However, when your material applies to any of the below list, an extension cannot be made.
    • The material is overdue
    • A reservation is made
    • The material is on long-term loan
    • You are under penalty period
  • Also, only loan periods of materials borrowed from the Komaba Library can be extended at the library counter.
  • For extending loan periods of other materials, please use MyOPAC.
  • You are also not able extend the loan period when you do not have the material with you.

  • A new loan period starts on the date you make the extension.
  • For example, in the case of a student, two weeks from the date that the extension is made is the new loan period.

Q2-4. Can I borrow journals?
  • A2-4. If you are a faculty staff, graduate student, or a student in the senior division, of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, Graduate School of Mathematical Sciences, or College of Arts and Sciences, One-night Loan is possible.
  • The loan period is until the morning of the following day, and a maximum of three journals can be borrowed at once.
  • *Only journals with barcode labels can be borrowed.

  • If the journal you would like to borrow is a reprint version (when searched on OPAC has the word "reprint version" in the "version" column), in addition to the One-night Loan stated above, other loaning options listed below are possible.
    • Research Loan made by full-time teaching staffs of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Arts and Sciences
    • Special Loan made by the subjects of Special Loaning.
  • In the case of reprint journals that only have barcode labels on the box, the box will be counted as one volume.

3. Returning Materials

Q3-1. How do I return the materials?
  • A3-1. Please bring the material to the library counter.

Q3-2. What do I do when I cannot return the material because the library is closed?
  • A3-2. Please use the book post located on the right side of the entrance.
  • The materials listed below cannot be returned through the book post, so please bring them directly to the counter during the library hours.
    • Materials located in places other than the Komaba Library
    • Supplement materials such as CD and CD-ROM

Q3-3.Are there penalties if the material is overdue?
  • A3-3. Yes, at the Komaba Library, you will not be able to borrow/extend the loan period of any materials for the number of overdue days, so please return the materials as soon as possible.

Q3-4. Will I be able to return books of the Komaba Library to another library in the University of Tokyo?
  • A3-4. Yes, you will be able to return them to the General Library of the Hongo Campus, and the Kashiwa Library of the Kashiwa Campus.
  • If you belong to a faculty/graduate school/institute of other campuses of the University of Tokyo, you will also be able to return them through the library of the faculty/graduate school/institute that you belong to.

Q3-5. Will I be able to return books borrowed from other library to the Komaba Library?

5. Using materials / Making Reservations

Q5-1. Where are the dictionaries?
  • A5-1. Reference books such as dictionaries and encyclopedias are located in the Reference books section in the 2nd floor and B1 floor.
  • Dictionaries that are used frequently, such as English-Japanese dictionaries and Japanese language dictionaries, are located in special bookshelves near reading seats in each floor, so please use them.
  • So that many people can use the reference books, borrowing or taking them out of the library is prohibited.

Q5-2. How can I read the rare books?
  • A5-2. A pre-application needs to be made.
  • Making an application and reading the rare materials can only be done 9:00-16:50 on weekdays.
  • After an application has been made, we will contact you on whether you are able to read the material or not. We may take some time to contact you, so please make an application so that you have enough time.

Q5-3. How can I use the microforms?
  • A5-3. You will need to make an application when you visit the library. Please come to the reference counter.
  • Microforms can only be used by 9:00-16:30 on weekdays.
  • Microforms refer to the materials with the [location] of "Komaba.Lib.Microform".

  • The price of making a copy is as listed below. (Only black and white)
    • Members of the University of Tokyo: 20 yen / page
    • Non-members: 40 / page

Q5-4. What is a Syllabus Corner?
  • A5-4. A Syllabus Corner is a place in the second floor where materials listed as reference books in the syllabus of the College of Arts and Sciences are located.
  • So that many people can use the materials in the Syllabus Corner, you will not be able to borrow them, but the same books are located in the normal bookshelves, so if there are any books you would like to borrow from the syllabus corner, please use these books.

Q5-5. How can I use the audio-visual materials?
  • A5-5. Audio-visual materials stored in the library can be watched/listened at the audio-visual booth in the second floor.
  • We will lend you the headphone and the material, so please come to the counter.

Q5-6. Which books can be reserved?
  • A5-6. Please search on the University of Tokyo OPAC, and check the [status] column of the page that has the detailed information of the material.
  • When the status is [on loan], [on reservation], [delivering back], [delivering to destination], and [reservation ○people], are the materials which can be reserved.

  • Please login to MyOPAC, search for the material that you would like to reserve, and go to the page with the material details. You will be able to make a reservation by clicking the Reserve button.
  • When there are many copies of the same book in the university, only one book can be borrowed/reserved.

6. Using the network / terminals

* Only student/faculty staffs of the University of Tokyo can use the network.

Q6-1. Can I use the Internet in the library?
  • A6-1. Yes, if you have an ECCS account, you will be able to use the Internet by any of the methods listed below.
    • Use the PC in the Media Park in the first floor
    • Bring your own PC and use the cable LAN
    • Bring your own PC and use the wireless LAN
    • Use utroam (can only be used in the university)
  • * Only students/faculty staffs of the University of Tokyo can use them.

Q6-2. Will I be able to bring my own PC?
  • A6-2. Yes, you will be able to use your own PC in the library, except for seats, which have the sign "no PCs".
  • However, in order to connect to the Internet, you will need things such as an ECCS account.

Q6-3. Will I be able to use wireless LAN?
  • A6-3. Yes, you will be able to use wireless LAN either by registering to the "Wireless LAN Experiment System", or by utroam (can only be used in the university).

Q6-4. What kind of electronic journals can I use?

  • A6-5. You will be able to search for the databases that you can use in University of Tokyo, through GACoS.
  • * Except for OPAC and "Free Access" databases, students/faculty staffs of the University of Tokyo can only use them.

7. Using the Facilities of the Library

Q7-1. Where can I make copies?
  • A7-1. Please use the copy corner in the first floor or B2 floor.
  • You can only make copies of library materials. Please fill in the "reference copy application form", put it in the collection box, and use the copy machine within the limit given by the copyright law.

  • There are five copying machines in the first floor, and one in the B2 floor.
  • No.5 copy machine in the first floor is the only coin-operated copy machine.
  • All other copy machines require copy cards. Please buy the copy card from the automatic copy card machine in the first floor, or from the CO-OP store.

Q7-2. How can I enter the B2 floor?
  • A7-2. Before March 25th 2013, a card key was required to enter the B2 floor, but from March 26th 2013, you are able to enter the room without a card key. You will not need anything to enter.

Q7-3. Is there a place in the library where eating and drinking is allowed?
  • A7-3. Yes, there is a lounge in the first floor where you can eat and drink.
  • Please remember that eating and drinking is prohibited in all other places of the library. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Q7-4. Is there a room that can be used for group studying?
  • A7-4. Yes, please use the Group study Room in the second floor.
  • The Group study Room can be used for studying/research of a group (more than 3 people, below 20 people) of students/faculty staffs of the University of Tokyo.
  • In the Group study Room, you will be able to use the whiteboard and projector that are set in the room. (There are no PCs)
  • The usage of this room is done by subscription basis with a unit of time periods of normal classes. When you make a reservation, please make sure that you bring your faculty staff/student ID card and come to the counter.

Q7-5. What do I do when I don’t know how to use the PC and/or printer in the Media Park?
  • A7-5. Please ask the system consultant in the media park.
  • The consultant is siting at the seat with an "i" mark, near the entrance.

Q7-6. How can I use the printer in the Media Park?
  • A7-6. Please insert a transportation electronic money card (Suica/PASMO), or a prepaid card from FujiZerox, to the card reader and carry out the printing job through the touch panel next to the printer.
  • The prepaid card is the same as the card used for photocopying. Please purchase the copy card, either from the copy card machine in the media park, or in the copy corner, both in the first floor.

8. Using libraries other than the Komaba Library

Q8-1. How can I use the materials stored in laboratories/departments of the Komaba I campus?
  • A8-1.
  • If you are a student who is currently enrolled in the University of Tokyo, or a faculty staff of the University of Tokyo
    • You will be able to use the materials by directly visiting the laboratories/departments.
    • Some laboratories/departments require you to contact them beforehand, so please check the related pages listed below, as well as the homepages of each laboratories/departments in advance.
  • For people other than written above
    • Please contact the Komaba Library through the library of the institution that you belong to.
    • If you do not belong to any institution, please contact the Komaba Library through the public library near your house.

Q8-2. How can I use other libraries of the University of Tokyo?
Q8-3. How can I get materials from other libraries of the University Tokyo to be delivered, and borrow it?
  • A8-3. Please login to MyOPAC and make an application.
  • The materials that can be delivered are those that are stored in libraries/library rooms of other campuses of the University of Tokyo. (There are some materials that cannot be delivered/borrowed.)
  • Please login to MyOPAC, search for the material that you would like to be delivered, and go to the page with the material details. You will be able to make a reservation by clicking the Reserve button.

Q8-4. How can I request for a copy of a material from another library of the University of Tokyo to be delivered?
  • A8-4. To make a request for the copy to be delivered, you will need to make an application, so please come to the reference counter.
  • After making an application, you will be able to have the copy of the material delivered through MyOPAC. [Charged]
  • * Copying of materials can only be done within the limit given by the copyright law. We will not be able to things such as copying the whole book.

  • There are two types of copying, as written below.
  • Copying by paper (only materials of libraries/library rooms of other campuses)
    • Please login to MyOPAC, search for the material that you would like to be delivered, and go to the page with the detail of the item. You will be able to make a request for the copy to be delivered, by clicking the COPY button.
  • Copying by PDF
    • Please login to MyOPAC, search for the material that you would like to be delivered, and go to the page with the detail of the item. You will be able to make a request by clicking the PDF button.
    • If you request a copy in PDF form, you will need to access it from a PC of the University of Tokyo and read/print it. You will only be able to print one copy, and due to the restriction by the copyright law, you will not be able to download the pdf file.

Q8-5. How can I use the libraries of other universities?
  • A8-5.
  • If you would like to visit the library directly
    • In most cases, you would need to contact them in advance, or will need a letter of introduction.
    • Please come to the reference counter of the Komaba Library 9:00-17:00 on weekdays.
    • * Please make sure that you have decided on which material you would like to use, and the date that you would like to visit, before coming to the counter.
    • Also, please have 2-3 days extra when you make a request of the day of use.

  • If you would like the material, or a copy of the material to be delivered
    • You will be able to have the materials or a copy of the material (only a part/section of the material) to be delivered from other university libraries. [Charged]
    • Please come to the reference counter 9:00-17:00 on weekdays.
    • Only students/faculty staffs of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences/College of Arts and Sciences can make an application at the Komaba Library.
    • * Members of Multi-Disciplinary Sciences and undergraduate students belonging to the natural sciences of the Senior Division will have to make an application at the Science Library, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
    • You are also able to make an application from MyOPAC. (A pre-application needs to be made)
    • The pre-application can also be done at the reference counter.

9. Others

Q9-1. How can I contact the library?
  • A9-1. You will be able to check it from the contact information (Komaba Library).
  • Please contact the section in charge, after having read the inquiry items.
  • * Contact by phone call is limited 9:00-17:00 on weekdays. Similarly, in the case of e-mails, the reply is limited 9:00-17:00 on weekdays, so please be careful.

Q9-2. When is the library open?
Q9-3. What do I do when I lost/found a belonging?
Q9-4. What should I do when I lost or stained/damaged the library material?
  • A9-4.
  • When you have lost the material (Lost)
    • We will ask you to fill in the report of the loss of library material, so please come to the counter.
    • If the material is not found within a month after submitting the report, you will have to compensate for it.
  • When you have stained/damaged the material (stain/damage)
    • When the stain/damage is severe, we will ask you to compensate for the material. We will examine the condition, so please bring the material to the counter.
    • For details about compensation, please contact the counter or the User Service Section.

Q9-5. What do I do when I forgot my password for MyOPAC?
  • A9-5. Please bring your usage ID and come to the counter 9:00-17:00 on weekdays.
  • We will reset the password.
  • * Please make sure that the person himself/herself comes to the counter. We will need to verify your identification so this cannot be done by phone call.

Q9-6. What do I do if there is a book that I would like the library to purchase?
  • A9-6. Please make an application via MyOPAC. There are two ways listed below which you can do.
    • Login to MyOPAC and carry out the procedures from the "Book Request" menu.
    • Press the "Order" button that appears when there are 0 search results in University of Tokyo OPAC, then login to MyOPAC, and carry out the procedures.

Q9-7. What do I do when I want to donate books?
  • A9-7. Please contact the Komaba Library Monograph Section

  • We would like to ask for your understanding that there are cases when we are not able to accept your donation in cases, for example when the library already has that book.

Q9-8. What is the music that is playing when the library is closing?
  • A9-8. The music is called "Shannon’s Lullaby".
  • It seems to be recorded in the BGM library "MQL02 PRO EDITION" of the MUSI-Q Company.
